Caregivers of older adults

What is the Caregiver Support Group?

The support group offers a chance for family caregivers who are all in the role of caring for an older adult to come together twice a month for sharing and problem solving.  It is not a therapy or counseling session.  Conversation is facilitated and all information shared at the meetings remain confidential.  Cookies and coffee are served at each meeting.

When and where does it meet?
The Caregiver Support Group meets the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 1:30 to 3:00pm at Providence Newberg Medical Center.  The meetings are held in the conference room (come in the main door and turn right down the first hallway and go all the way to the end of the hall).

Do I need to register ?
It is not necessary to sign up ahead of time.  You are welcome to come to any meeting.  You may want to call the Faith in Action office and leave your name and number in case of an unexpected cancellation of the meeting due to weather or other unforeseen circumstance.

What is the cost?
There is no charge to participants to attend the support group.  It is offered as a service of Faith in Action.

Can I bring the person I care for?
Since participants often share difficult stories about their loved one, it may not be comfortable for other participants to speak openly in front of a care receiver and it may make the care receiver feel uncomfortable to hear about the challenges of care givers.  If you need assistance making arrangements for your loved one while you attend the group, please call the Faith in Action office (503-537-1549) for referrals or assistance.

What is the purpose of the support group?
Many participants gain helpful advice from other caregivers on practical things related to the care of their loved one.  Others appreciate an opportunity to speak openly about the joys and challenges related to caregiving with others who are in the same role and understand their situation and feelings.  For others, it is a break from the daily routine of caregiving – a time for laughter, support and sharing.
